The words drop in the flow of a larger sentence, a larger point. They occur between parentheses. Is this why – to my knowledge – no one has ever cited them? They are devoted to Alfred Hitchcock’s Marnie (1964) by Raymond Bellour in his major 1977 text “Énoncer”, later included in his collection L’Analyse du film. I first read them ... when I was 18 years old. And then I went around quoting these words – in classrooms, in articles, in conferences – for two decades or more: … that unreal film we call film …

The Image by the French surrealist writer Pierre Reverdy originally appeared in Nord-Sud, the literary magazine he founded in 1917 with Guillaume Apollinaire and Max Jacob. The text, quoted and recut, shows up like a refrain without reference in several of Jean-Luc Godard’s films. The crux of Reverdy’s piece is that the image, as a monolithical entity that can be isolated, doesn’t exist. “I’ve always said”, Godard said, “that images don’t exist in cinema. There is always an image before and an image after.”

For the cinema, as Godard once said, is “transitory, ephemeral”, written on the wind; inscribed only in fleeting traces, some disconnected images and sounds, and sentimentally overloaded, scrambled memories. Cinema is hard evidence, but only fitfully can it serve as a testament; death is too much at work there. It is the form of this remembered, necessarily scrappy, haunted, sad history of the twentieth century that Godard evokes in all the prodigious techniques of his Histoire(s) du cinéma

There is no essential form or content to cinephilia, but maybe there is something like an essential cinephile process or gesture. Let me put it this way: cinephilia is a war machine; a tactical, cultural war machine. Always a different war, and always a different machine, depending on where and when you are, who you’re fighting with, and what you’re fighting against. In this sense, everything that people have said about cinephilia – that it’s melancholic or surrealist or whatever – can be true, if it fits the particular piece of cinephile history, and if you can tell that story well, if you can give it a mobilising energy.
