Serge Toubiana

Serge Toubiana (1949) is a French film critic and journalist. Between 1972 and 2000 he worked as an editorial director for Cahiers du Cinéma, a time marked by his collaboration with Serge Daney between 1973 and 1984. In 1976 he collaborated on the scenario of the film Moi, Pierre Rivière, ayant égorgé ma mère, ma soeur et mon frère…, a film by René Allio. Between 2003 and 2016 he was the director of the Cinémathèque Française. With Antoine De Baecque, he co-authored a biography of François Truffaut (1996). He published Les fantômes du souvenir (2016), his memoirs as a cinéphile, and more recently Le temps de voir (2017), a collection of thoughts on cinema. He also collaborated on the film Hitchcock/Truffaut (2015), based on recollections of filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese, Olivier Assayas, Wes Anderson and others on the influence of François Truffaut’s book Le cinéma selon Hitchcock (1966) on their work. In 2017, Toubiana became the chief executive of UniFrance, an organization that promotes the distribution of French films.
