Het Documentaire Paviljoen & IFFR: Youth Trilogy by Wang Bing

To mark IFFR 2025 and the release of the third and final instalment of Wang Bing’s Youth films, IDFA’s Het Documentaire Paviljoen and IFFR are joining forces for a full day of screenings in Amsterdam. On Sunday, 9 February – the final day of IFFR – they will present Wang Bing’s complete Youth trilogy. As an uncompromising voice in contemporary Chinese cinema, Wang Bing’s work unflinchingly portrays the socio-economic changes and challenging working conditions in China.

In Youth (Spring) (212’), Wang Bing observes the daily lives of a group of young Chinese textile workers who, amid the clatter of sewing machines and cluttered dormitories, celebrate their youth while striving to build a future. Youth (Hard Times) (227’) highlights the exceptional economic structure of Zhili, China’s textile city. In small, privately run workshops with minimal regulation, 300,000 mostly young workers toil for uncertain wages. The third and final part, Youth (Homecoming) (152’), captures the fleeting joy of visiting friends and family and taking part in the daily activities of the places where they grew up.
