Essay on Jean-Luc Vilmouth, conceptual sculptor who lives and works in Paris. The artist is interested in work tools and in particular the hammer, an object with cultural connotations. In 1981, he sent a letter to NASA in which he proposed dropping a hammer into low orbit during a space shuttle trip. NASA responded negatively by letter, explaining that there is already too much waste floating in space and that no one could see this hammer. Attached to this letter was documentation on the shuttle.

« Le Marteau est une commande, un travail en vidéo sur Jean-Luc Vilmouth [.], sculpteur conceptuel. Son travail, celui que j'ai filmé, était basé sur un marteau qu'il enfonçait dans un mur, oui, il creusait un mur et mettait un marteau dedans et c'était une sculpture. Cela se passait sur une sorte de terrasse en haut d'une maison sur un toit à Paris... Et comme il avait fait un travail sur le socle, cela m'avait fait penser aux chaises musicales : les chaises sont en cercle, et puis il y a de moins en moins de chaises, et il y a quelqu'un qui reste debout. Et, si mon souvenir est bon, comme il avait envoyé une lettre à la NASA, une lettre demandant d'expédier un travail sur l'espace et que la NASA avait refusé, je crois qu'il lisait cette lettre, pendant qu'on envoyait le marteau dans le ciel. »
