António Reis & Margarida Cordeiro, Restored
From 8 to 17 May, TIFF Cinematheque in Toronto presents a retrospective dedicated to Portuguese filmmakers António Reis and Margarida Cordeiro. The programme centres on newly restored versions carried out by the Cinemateca Portuguesa of three of their films – Trás-os-Montes (1976), Ana (1982) and Rosa de Areia (1989) – part of a recent acquisition by distributor Cinema Guild. The deal, negotiated with Cinemateca Portuguesa, marks the first step in a wider rollout that will bring the films to North American audiences through theatrical screenings, followed by home-video and digital releases. Alongside these films, the series includes works by Manoel de Oliveira, Paulo Rocha and Pedro Costa, reflecting the duo’s lasting influence. The series includes in-person introductions by Toronto-based critics Ryan Krahn and Saffron Maeve, as well as video introductions by filmmakers Pedro Costa and João Pedro Rodrigues.
