These filmmakers were all ciné-adventurers. Which is not the same as conquerors. It was never about claiming others’ space but carving out a new one for themselves. Modestly and self-assuredly, they were each content with mapping the fictions of a single street or two. This way, they managed “to grant a filmic dignity to that which didn’t have any,” as Serge Daney once remarked about the true meaning of realism. They created images where none existed. Therein lie their politics.

Just like last year, a coronavirus edition of Bologna’s unsurpassed Cinema Ritrovato festival took place this summer. The festival is unique for its broad focus on the history of film, showing new restorations and recent (re)discoveries rather than new films.

Net zoals vorig jaar vond deze zomer een corona-editie plaats van het onvolprezen Cinema Ritrovato-festival in Bologna, dat met zijn brede focus op de gehele filmgeschiedenis enig is in zijn soort. Niet zozeer nieuwe films worden er vertoond, als wel nieuwe restauraties en recente (her)ontdekkingen.

Met het CinemaScope-formaat, zo schreef Eric Rohmer in zijn recensie van Premingers The Court Martial of Billy Mitchell, verandert niet de stijl maar de ethiek. De overeenkomst tussen inhoud en shotverhoudingen is niet van fysieke maar van morele aard.
