Goethe on Demand

Die Taube auf dem Dach (Iris Gusner, 1973)

Earlier this month, the Goethe-Institut launched Goethe on Demand, a new streaming platform which presents a variety of online film programs, film festivals and film series that can be streamed from home.

One of the latest additions to the platform includes the film series ‘Women at Work’, which centers women in the workplace and compares perspectives from the GDR with films from the 2000s to the present day. Part of the series is Carla (Herrmann Zschoche, 1965), which follows a young woman who moves to a small town in the north of East Germany to begin her first job as a schoolteacher. Bright and idealistic (and brought to life by the luminous Jutta Hoffmann), it is one of a dozen East German films banned by officials in 1965/1966 and never screened for the public until 1990, after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Other films include Das siebente Jahr (Frank Vogel, 1968), Die Taube auf dem Dach (Iris Gusner, 1973) and Unser kurzes Leben (Lothar Warneke, 1981). The films are presented in original language with subtitles. They are accessible online and free of charge after registration.
