“Dear Mr. Rossellini,

I saw your films Open City and Paisan, and enjoyed them very much. If you need a Swedish actress who speaks English very well, who has not forgotten her German, who is not very understandable in French, and who in Italian knows only ‘ti amo’, I am ready to come and make a film with you.”

Ingrid Bergman1

André Bazin3

“When I came in touch with Rossellini, I saw the loving eyes through which he observed everything to make things alive through his framings. It was actually through his attitude that I thought that, after all, films may be created without deceits, without presumptions, without thinking of sending around quite definite messages... I definitely realized that the camera, the film apparatus on the whole are not so very mysterious, so terribly technical. It was just a matter of relating quite simply what one was looking at.”
